Windows 7 RC is a GO for Production!

windows7I am a technet member and thus downloaded Windows 7 on April 30th when it became available to all technet/msdn subscribers.  I have since installed it on my barrage of computers for testing purposes, only to realize that it is indeed a superb OS.  I have sinc then installed it as my main os on my production systems and have run into 0 (zero) problems thus far.  The following systems now house Windows 7 in x64 mode:

  • Lenovo X301 w 128gb ssd, 4gb ram – Travel Laptop
  • Mac Pro 8 Core – 3.0ghz – 8gb ram – Main Production Machine
  • Mac Pro 4 Core – 2.66ghz – 8gb ram – Home Desktop Unit
  • Thinkpad T60p – 2.33ghz Core 2 Duo – 4gb Ram – Old Laptop for Testing Purposes

All of the above units are running perfectly and this new OS seems to have given them a new lease on life in regard to speed and stability.  The above machines have all been put through the paces with various versions of the Windows OS in the past and I can confidently say that Windows 7 is the one that makes them sing.  I have been using the following software configurations across the board:

  • Windows 7 x64.
  • Microsoft Office 2007 w SP2.
  • AVG Free for Antivirus for Windows 7 until I find something 100% compatible.
  • Adobe Creative Suite CS4 Web Premium – Limited Options on Laptops.
  • Trillian Astra for Multi Protocol Chat.
  • Tweet Deck (which has some issues in dual monitor setups).
  • Various Utilities that one requires.

I will be posting my results as time goes on with uses of 7 such as Libraries, the new UI, etc.  For now I am confident in my decision to move to 7 as my primary OS….at least 50% of the time.

RATHOLE:
I am sure you are wondering…why does this guy have such powerful MAC hardware and WHY does he use windows on it.  Well, first things first…I am what you can refer to as a 50/50 SWITCHER…  I have been a windows person since the beginning of time and about 2 years ago discovered that OS X is a worthy contender.  However, I can not switch to OS X 100% to do my ‘day job’.  I manage an IT infrastructure and thus the windows to windows scenario works best.  I use OS X generally when it is ‘ME’ time and when I want to work on images and or video…my music is all on the Apple side as well. All that being said…my theory is that Apple computers are in-fact the BEST PC’s I have every used for Windows and OS X Alike.  Yes I know you need to get some major cash and or a loan together to purchase Apple hardware, but if you look at their refurbished section in the online store you can find some great deals…its almost like having to buy a new car and insurance at the same time.
